Oak Ridge Reservation Unique Assets
The Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) is approximately 33,500 acres of land that is owned and managed by the US Department of Energy. The current land area of the ORR is a little more than half of the area that was set aside during World War Two for the Manhattan Project. Today, the ORR supports six science and education facilities and as well as numerous research areas. Much of the forested landscape is valuable for its scientific potential, ongoing environmental research, historic value, education, and conservation. Educational hikes are organized for the public by staff at Oak Ridge National Lab, and turkey and deer hunting occur annually on the ORR. In 1999 about 3000 acres was designated by former Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson as the Three Bend Scenic and Wildlife Management Refuge Area and another 3000 acres was set aside in 2007 as the Black Oak Ridge Conservation Easement.
